First Impression

The wine list at Alleia signals immediately that someone here actually cares — a 150-plus bottle program anchored in Italy and France, at a Mediterranean restaurant in downtown Chattanooga, is not something you stumble into. This isn't a list assembled by a food distributor on autopilot. There's a point of view here, and it leans confidently Old World.

Selection Deep Dive

Italy is the clear north star: Piedmont shows up with Barolo and Barbaresco, Tuscany brings Brunello di Montalcino, and the South gets its due with Nero d'Avola and Fiano — varietals most Chattanooga wine lists wouldn't touch. France fills in the gaps respectably with Burgundy and Rhône, and Spain rounds out the edges. The list isn't exhaustive, but it's coherent — every region represented feels intentional rather than obligatory. The gap is the New World: if you're a domestic drinker, you'll find a few options but this list isn't built for you, and that's actually a feature.

By the Glass

With 10 to 20 pours available by the glass, you're not stuck choosing between two tired options. The program leans into the same Old World sensibility as the bottle list, which means there's a real chance you're pouring something interesting rather than something safe. Rotation details aren't fully published, but a sommelier on staff suggests these pours aren't just whatever needs to move.

💰Best Value

St. Innocent Freedom Hill Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2017 — $90

At 80% markup, this is the most fairly priced bottle on the list relative to retail. St. Innocent is a serious Oregon producer and the Freedom Hill vineyard is the real deal — you're getting a proper, age-worthy Willamette Pinot at a markup that doesn't make you wince.

💎Hidden Gem

Southern Italian Fiano

Most tables at an Italian-leaning restaurant will default to Pinot Grigio without blinking. Fiano is the smarter move — more texture, more personality, and a grape that actually wants to be next to wood-fired food and charcuterie. The fact that Alleia carries it at all puts them ahead of 90% of comparable restaurants.

Skip This

Sun Goddess Pinot Grigio Friuli 2021

Fifty dollars for a bottle you can find at retail for $20 is a 150% markup, and Pinot Grigio is rarely the answer anyway when there's Fiano on the same list. This one feels like it's banking on name recognition from a certain celebrity association. Pass.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Nero d'Avola + Housemade pasta with wood-fired preparation

Nero d'Avola brings dark fruit and enough earthy grip to hold its own against charred, savory pasta dishes without bulldozing them. It's a Southern Italian wine meeting Southern Italian cooking instincts — the logic writes itself.

✔️ The Bottom Line

Alleia has the strongest Italian wine program in Chattanooga, full stop, and a sommelier who can actually help you navigate it. The markups take some of the shine off, but the list itself earns your trust — and that's worth something.
