First Impression
The list at Calico reads like something assembled for comfort, not adventure — familiar Italian names, some California heavy-hitters, and not much that'll surprise you. That's not necessarily a knock; this place has been feeding Jackson Hole since 1966, and the wine list matches the vibe: casual, approachable, and reliable enough to get through a wood-fired pizza without complaint. Just don't show up expecting discovery.
Selection Deep Dive
Calico leans into Tuscany as its anchor, with workhorses like Ruffino Chianti Classico and Antinori Santa Cristina doing the heavy lifting on the Italian side. California fills out the rest with crowd-favorites like Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay and Meiomi Pinot Noir — wines you'd find at a hundred other restaurants in a hundred other cities. There's no real reach into southern Italy, no Nebbiolo, no natural wine curiosity, nothing to signal that someone's passionate about the list. It covers the bases without ever trying to steal second.
By the Glass
Eight options by the glass, priced $12–$18, which is on the steep side for what's being poured — La Marca Prosecco and Meiomi Pinot Noir are fine, but they're grocery store-tier bottles in a market where the markup hurts. Rotation doesn't appear to be a thing here; what you see is what you get, week after week.
Ruffino Chianti Classico — $12
If you're eating pizza or pasta, this is the move. Chianti Classico with tomato-based dishes is one of the most reliable combinations in Italian food, and Ruffino delivers the acidity and red fruit you need without drama. Best value on the list.
Antinori Santa Cristina Sangiovese
Most people skip past it because the name doesn't ring bells the way Antinori's Tignanello does, but Santa Cristina is solid everyday Sangiovese from one of Tuscany's most storied houses. Underordered, underappreciated, and exactly right with a margherita.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay
Stag's Leap is a great producer, but Chardonnay at this price point in a Jackson Hole tourist-adjacent restaurant almost certainly means a significant markup on a wine you can grab at Total Wine for $20. The value math doesn't work.
Ruffino Chianti Classico + Hand Thrown Pizza
Sangiovese and tomato sauce are practically engineered for each other — the wine's natural acidity cuts through the fat, lifts the tomato, and makes the crust taste better. It's one of the few no-brainer food-and-wine combinations that actually delivers every time.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Calico is a beloved valley institution and the wine list reflects that — it's built for easy nights out, not wine exploration. Come for the pizza and the vibe, order the Chianti, and don't overthink it.
