First Impression
Chapel Tavern walks in wearing a cocktail shaker and you're half-surprised it even has a wine list. But flip past the frosé and frozen rum drinks and there's something quietly decent happening here — a short, focused selection that doesn't take itself too seriously, which turns out to be exactly the right move for a lively Midtown bar.
Selection Deep Dive
The list clocks in at somewhere between 15 and 30 bottles, leaning on California and Washington with a few European curve balls thrown in to keep things interesting. It's not trying to be a wine bar, and it doesn't pretend to be — but someone made real choices here rather than just phoning in a big-brand safety net. The inclusion of a Côtes du Rhône Villages red and an Italian frizzante alongside the expected West Coast lineup suggests there's a brain behind the buying, even if the depth is limited. Gaps are obvious — no serious reds, no aged bottles, no deep dive into anything — but for the format, it holds up.
By the Glass
Six to ten options by the glass is a respectable spread for a bar this casual. The rotation doesn't appear to change much, so don't expect seasonal surprises, but what's there is priced so honestly it's almost disorienting. When your glass pour is below retail, you stop complaining about the selection.
Red Côtes du Rhône Villages — $13
Retail on this runs $15 and Chapel Tavern is pouring it for less. A Grenache-forward Rhône blend at a bar markup that is literally negative — you'd be ridiculous not to order it.
2024 Mary Taylor + Sofia Brescia Frizzante Bianco Veneto
Most people at Chapel Tavern are ordering frozen cocktails, which means this lightly sparkling northern Italian white is just sitting there waiting for someone to notice. Mary Taylor's import game is legit, and at $12 — two dollars below retail — it's the most interesting wine on the list that nobody's ordering.
Rosé
At $13 it's technically a steal on paper, but with no producer information available and a bar full of genuinely fun alternatives, a mystery rosé is the least compelling thing on this list. Order the Rhône or the frizzante instead.
2024 Mary Taylor + Sofia Brescia Frizzante Bianco Veneto + Frosé
Hear us out — if you're already in frosé territory, you're here for fun, not a four-course dinner. The frizzante's light bubbles and crisp acidity cut right through a frozen, sweetened drink in between sips, and the Italian white brings just enough character to remind you wine can be playful too.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Chapel Tavern is not a wine destination, but its pricing is so honest it borders on accidental generosity — and that earns it real credit. If you're in Midtown Reno and want something decent in your glass without getting gouged, this is a legitimate call.
