First Impression
Walk into the ground floor of a senior living community at ASU and the last thing you expect is an Award of Excellence-caliber wine list โ yet here we are. The room is casual, the vibe is open-to-everyone, and the list punches well above what the setting telegraphs. This is the definition of a Wild Card.
Selection Deep Dive
The 80-120 bottle list leans hard into California and Arizona, which turns out to be a smart, coherent strategy rather than a cop-out. You get heavy hitters like Jordan Cab from Alexander Valley and Duckhorn Merlot out of Napa sitting alongside genuinely interesting Arizona producers โ Arizona Stronghold Vineyards and Merkin Vineyards (Maynard James Keenan's Caduceus project) give the list real regional credibility. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay covers the California white side competently, and Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling sneaks in as a crowd-pleaser that actually deserves its spot. The list won't satisfy a Burgundy obsessive, but for what it's doing โ California classics plus an honest Arizona showcase โ it holds together well.
By the Glass
With 10-16 options by the glass ranging from $10-$18, the program is genuinely functional rather than an afterthought. That range is wide enough to catch most dinner orders without forcing anyone into a bottle. We'd love to see more Arizona producers represented in the glass pours specifically, given how strong the local angle is on the bottle list.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling โ $35
At the low end of the bottle range, this is the easy yes โ a reliably food-friendly Riesling that works with half the menu and rarely disappoints at this price point.
Merkin Vineyards (Caduceus Cellars)
Most people scrolling this list will gravitate toward the Napa names, but Merkin is doing genuinely interesting work with Arizona terroir. Skip the familiar and take the local gamble โ it's worth it.
Duckhorn Merlot (Napa Valley)
Duckhorn is a fine wine, but it's also widely available retail and tends to carry full restaurant markup here. The Arizona bottles tell a more interesting story for less money.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley) + Lasagna
Jordan Cab is built for exactly this โ rich, meaty, with enough structure to cut through the layers of pasta and sauce without overwhelming the table. Classic match, no overthinking required.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
A senior living community in Tempe earning a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and actually backing it up with California classics and legit Arizona producers is the kind of surprise we live for. If you're near ASU and sleeping on this list, wake up.
