The wine list at Extra Virgin doesn't try to be something it's not โ it's built to move bottles at a lively tapas bar, and it knows it. Prices are honest, the regional mix actually tracks with the food, and the moment you find out about Wednesday half-price bottles, the whole operation starts to make a lot of sense.
The list pulls from Spain, Italy, California, and Argentina โ which is exactly the right call for a Mediterranean and Latin-leaning small plates menu. Spanish Rioja Crianza and Reserva anchor the Old World side and give the list some actual backbone. California Cab and Argentine Malbec cover the crowd-pleaser lane without completely phoning it in. It won't challenge anyone who's been to a real wine bar, but for what Extra Virgin is trying to do, the range is more than adequate.
Somewhere between 10 and 16 pours on any given night, which is a solid BTG program for a casual tapas spot. You'll find Cava or Prosecco bubbles, Argentine Malbec, and California Cabernet in the rotation โ approachable, food-friendly, and priced at $10โ$15 a glass. Nothing here is going to stop the table's conversation, but that's kind of the point.
Spanish Rioja Crianza โ $40
Rioja Crianza at the low end of the bottle range is the sweet spot here โ real oak, real structure, real food compatibility. On a Wednesday, you're getting a legitimately food-friendly bottle of Spanish red for somewhere around $20. That's not a deal, that's a steal.
Cava
Everyone reaches for still wine with tapas and it's the wrong move. Cava by the glass is the sleeper pick โ it's got the acidity to cut through oil and salt, it's cheap, and it keeps the energy of the meal where it should be. Most people walk right past it.
California Cabernet Sauvignon
Mid-tier California Cab is the path of least resistance on a list like this โ familiar name, reliable enough, but the worst value-per-dollar of the bunch. It doesn't belong in a tapas context anyway. There are better bottles on this list that actually want to be at this table.
Spanish Rioja Crianza + Charcuterie and cheese board
Rioja Crianza's earthy fruit and light oak handle cured meats and aged cheeses without bulldozing them โ it's the pairing that tapas bars in Spain have been running for decades because it works.
Wednesday โ Half-price bottles on Wednesdays in both the bar and dining room. Reserve and highly allocated bottles are generally excluded, but the standard list is fair game.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Extra Virgin isn't a destination wine list, but Wednesday half-price bottles plus fair everyday pricing makes it one of the better deals in Kansas City for drinking well while eating your way through a table full of small plates. Send your friends โ just make sure they know about Wednesdays.
