Wingman Metrics
You walk into Flight expecting a casual neighborhood spot and find a wine list with real ambition β Finger Lakes Riesling from the good producers, Burgundy by the glass, RhΓ΄ne on deck. It's a lot more than the Exchange Blvd address would suggest. Wednesday half-price bottles seal the deal before you've even sat down.
The list runs 100 to 150 bottles and punches above its weight for a mid-sized city wine bar. Finger Lakes gets its proper due with Dr. Konstantin Frank and Hermann J. Wiemer anchoring the New York section β two of the most credible names in American Riesling, full stop. Willamette Valley Pinot Noir rounds out the domestic side, and the Old World isn't neglected: Rioja, RhΓ΄ne, and Burgundy all show up with enough presence to feel intentional rather than obligatory. Gaps exist β no deep Italian section, and South America is largely absent β but the focus feels deliberate rather than lazy.
Twenty to thirty-five options by the glass is genuinely impressive for a room this size, and the range tracks the bottle list well rather than defaulting to generic pours. Burgundy by the glass is a rare find at this price point in Rochester, and glasses clock in between $11 and $18, which is honest money for what's being poured. Rotation details aren't published, so ask your server what's new β this is the kind of place where the answer might actually be interesting.
Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling β $38β$48 (bottle est.)
Wiemer is one of the Finger Lakes' benchmark producers, and getting it at a wine bar without a punishing markup makes this the easiest call on the list. Drink local, drink well.
Spanish Tempranillo / Rioja
Everyone comes here chasing Riesling or Pinot, and the Rioja selection gets overlooked. Spanish Tempranillo at a New York wine bar rarely gets the attention it deserves, and the markups here are unlikely to sting.
Generic Oregon Pinot Noir (non-specific Willamette Valley)
Willamette is on the list, but without knowing the exact producer, you risk paying Pinot Noir prices for a mid-tier bottle that doesn't justify the spend. Ask which producer before you commit β if the server can't name it confidently, order the Wiemer instead.
Dr. Konstantin Frank Riesling + Charcuterie Board
Frank's Riesling brings enough acidity to cut through cured meats and enough fruit to balance the salt. It's the kind of pairing that makes you feel like you figured something out, even though it's been working for centuries.
