You're sitting on a patio in Aurora, surrounded by biergarten vibes and the smell of bratwurst, and someone hands you a wine list. It's short โ eight or nine bottles deep โ but it leans German and means it. That alone earns our attention.
This is not a list trying to be all things to all people, and that's a compliment. The focus sits squarely on German whites, with Von Schleinitz Riesling anchoring the dry end and Moselland Ars Vitis Riesling showing up as the seasonal feature โ both legitimate Mosel producers that belong on any German-themed list. Bella Pellegrino sparkling rounds things out on the sweeter side. The range is thin, sure, but everything here has a reason to be here, which is more than we can say for plenty of larger lists in nicer zip codes.
Nearly the entire list is available by the glass, which makes sense at a patio spot where nobody's committing to a full bottle between bratwurst bites. Prices land in the $9โ$9.50 range โ honest money for the setting. There's no rotating glass program to speak of, but at these prices, you're not owed one.
Von Schleinitz Riesling โ $9
A dry German Riesling from a real Mosel producer at $9 a glass is a flat-out win. This is the kind of wine that makes the food taste better and doesn't punish your wallet for ordering a second pour.
Moselland Ars Vitis Riesling
Listed as the seasonal 'Besonderer Wein,' most people here will order a beer and never notice it. Their loss. Moselland's Ars Vitis is a step up in seriousness โ if it's on when you visit, grab it before the biergarten crowd drinks through it.
Bella Pellegrino Sparkling (Dessert/Sweet)
A sweet sparkling labeled as 'dessert' doesn't have much of a role at a schnitzel-and-sauerkraut spot. Not bad, just out of place โ and if you want bubbles with your pretzel, there are better calls on this list.
Von Schleinitz Riesling + Bratwurst
Dry Riesling and grilled sausage is one of the most historically validated pairings in existence. The wine's acidity cuts through the fat, the slight minerality plays off the char, and suddenly you're having a very good time in Aurora.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Helga's doesn't have a wine program โ it has a short, focused list that actually matches the restaurant it's attached to, and that's rarer than it sounds. Come for the beer, stay for the Riesling.
