First Impression

Walking into Herbie's, the wine list feels like the room itself — upscale but unpretentious, with a clear point of view rooted in California and France. It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, and it doesn't need to. A Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2019 tells you this list has been doing something right for a while.

Selection Deep Dive

The 150-250 bottle list leans hard into its two strengths: Napa Cabernet and French classics. On the California side, you'll find names like Jordan and Stag's Leap anchoring the Cab section, with Flowers and Meiomi representing the Pinot Noir range — one a serious coastal producer, one a crowd pleaser. Sonoma Chardonnay gets its due, and France shows up with Burgundy and Bordeaux classifications that give the list some old-world credibility. The gaps are real — no meaningful Southern Hemisphere presence, nothing adventurous from Italy or Spain — but the core audience for Beef Wellington and Steak Frites probably isn't crying out for skin-contact Txakoli.

By the Glass

With 12 to 20 pours available, the by-the-glass program is one of the stronger selling points here. That range gives you real options whether you're opening with a glass of Sonoma Chardonnay or closing with a Napa Cab alongside the beef. Rotation evidence is thin, so don't count on surprises — but for a neighborhood bistro, the depth by the glass is above average.

💰Best Value

Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley — $65

Jordan is a reliable, food-friendly Cab that consistently drinks above its retail price point. At a restaurant in this category, landing it without egregious markup makes it the smart order for the table splitting a steak.

💎Hidden Gem

Flowers Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

Most people at Herbie's are going straight for the Napa Cabs, which means Flowers tends to sit underordered. That's their loss. This is a serious coastal Pinot with real tension and structure — and it holds its own against the Butter Roasted Chicken in a way no Cabernet ever will.

Skip This

Meiomi Pinot Noir, California

Meiomi is a fine supermarket bottle, and there's nothing wrong with it — but at restaurant pricing it loses its only argument (being cheap). With Flowers on the same list, there's no reason to order this one.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley + Beef Wellington

Stag's Leap is built for exactly this moment. The structured tannins and dark fruit cut through the richness of the pastry and the beef without overwhelming the duxelles, and the wine's relative elegance keeps the pairing from going sledgehammer. Classic for a reason.

✔️ The Bottom Line

Herbie's isn't going to blow any wine nerd's mind, but it delivers a well-curated, fairly priced list that genuinely supports a great meal. If you're in Clayton and ordering the Beef Wellington, you're in good hands.
