Wingman Metrics
The James Room is, at its core, a cocktail bar — and the wine list knows it. Sixteen labels isn't ambitious, but it's not an afterthought either. What you get is a clean, approachable list that won't overwhelm anyone who wandered in for a BeltLine stroll and decided to stay.
The list leans heavily on recognizable, grocery-store-adjacent names — Decoy, Intercept, Villa Maria — which signals the goal is comfort over discovery. There's a modest Champagne flex with both Veuve Clicquot and G.H. Mumm on the sparkling side, and a couple of genuinely interesting picks tucked in: the Laporte Sancerre and Simmonet Chablis suggest someone at least glanced at a Loire Valley map. The Andre Brunel Grenache and Gran Pasas Monastrell are the only real nods toward old-world character in the reds, but the list gaps out quickly after that — no Pinot Noir, no Nebbiolo, nothing that asks much of the drinker.
Thirteen of the sixteen bottles are available by the glass, which is genuinely generous and the list's strongest feature. Prices run $12–$22 a glass, which sits on the higher end for what's being poured — you're paying for the BeltLine zip code as much as the wine. Rotation appears static, so don't expect seasonal surprises.
Chic Barcelona Cava Brut — $12
At the low end of the glass price range, Cava punches well above its price point compared to the Champagnes on this list. Same festive bubbles, no luxury tax.
Sauvion Chenin Blanc
Most people at a cocktail bar will reach for Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay — the Sauvion Chenin Blanc is the sleeper pick here. Loire Chenin brings texture and a little grip that neither of those deliver, and it flies under the radar every time.
Veuve Clicquot Brut
Veuve at a cocktail bar means you're paying full retail markup on top of restaurant markup for a bottle that gets no special treatment. The Cava delivers the same moment for a fraction of the price.
Laporte Sancerre + Any oyster or seafood small plate on the kitchen menu
Sancerre and fresh seafood is a classic for a reason — the wine's bright acidity and mineral edge cut through brine and fat without fighting the kitchen. It's the most sophisticated pairing this list can produce.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The James Room is a cocktail bar first and a wine destination never — but the list is competent enough to get you through a bottle without frustration. Come for the atmosphere, order the Cava or the Sancerre, and let the cocktail menu handle the heavy lifting.
