The wine list at La Bodega reads like someone actually cares about Spain — not just Rioja and Cava, but Verdejo from Rueda and Garnacha from Campo de Borja, regions that don't usually show up in Kansas City tapas joints. It's not a sprawling list, but what's here feels curated rather than grabbed off a distributor sheet. Walking in, the vibe is loud, warm, and social — this is a place built for sharing bottles, not nursing them.
The list runs 40 to 70 bottles deep and keeps its focus almost entirely on Spain, which is exactly the right call for a tapas bar. You've got your Albariño from Rías Baixas, Verdejo from Rueda, Cava for bubbles, Garnacha from Campo de Borja, and Tempranillo-driven Rioja Reservas anchoring the reds. The geographic range within Spain is better than most dedicated wine bars in town — this isn't just Rioja on repeat. The gaps you'd notice are a lack of Priorat depth and no Sherry program to speak of, which for a Spanish spot feels like a missed opportunity.
Ten to sixteen options by the glass, priced $9–$16, which is genuinely reasonable for the quality tier they're working in. The glass program mirrors the bottle list in its Spanish focus, so you can actually drink regionally without committing to a full bottle. Rotation isn't confirmed, but with an active specials program and a Thursday dedicated to Marqués de Cáceres, there's enough movement to keep regulars interested.
Garnacha, Campo de Borja — $9–$12
Campo de Borja Garnacha overdelivers at this price point — juicy, low-tannin, food-friendly — and at La Bodega's glass pricing it's the easiest yes on the list. On a Monday half-price night, it's almost embarrassing how good the deal is.
Verdejo, Rueda
Everyone orders the Albariño because they've heard of it. The Verdejo from Rueda is sharper, more herbal, and typically a few dollars cheaper — it cuts through fried tapas better and most people at this restaurant have never tried it. Order it first.
Cava
Cava is fine, but at a tapas bar where the food and the Garnacha are this good, spending your glass budget on sparkling wine feels like showing up to a paella dinner and filling up on bread. The Cava here isn't bad, it's just not where the value lives.
Rioja Reserva (Tempranillo) + Paella
Wednesday paella night plus a glass of Rioja Reserva is the whole point of this place. The Tempranillo's earthy depth and mild oak don't fight the saffron and seafood — they frame it. This is the combo to book the reservation around.
Monday — Monday: All wines under $50 at half price, 5pm–10pm. Thursday: Marqués de Cáceres half price all day. Sunday: Half-price sangria all day.
🎲 The Bottom Line
La Bodega is the Wild Card Kansas City didn't know it needed — a genuinely Spain-focused wine list with fair pricing and a half-price Monday that should be on everyone's weekly calendar. Send your friends here, especially on a Wednesday when the paella and a Rioja Reserva are waiting.
