Wingman Metrics
You're sitting on Sibley Lake watching the sun drop into the water, and someone hands you a wine list built almost entirely around California. It's not a list that surprises you, but it earns its Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — the names on here are legit, even if the approach is conservative. Think of it as a greatest hits album: you know all the songs, and that's kind of the point.
The list runs 80-120 bottles and leans hard into California — Napa and Sonoma dominate, with marquee producers like Jordan, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Cakebread Cellars, Duckhorn, and Rombauer doing most of the heavy lifting. Chardonnay is clearly the star here, with multiple tier options from Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches to Rombauer giving white wine drinkers real choices. Cabernet Sauvignon coverage is solid if predictable — Jordan and Stag's Leap are crowd-pleasers that won't disappoint. Don't come looking for Burgundy, Barolo, or anything remotely off-the-beaten-path; this list knows its audience and plays to them.
Ten to sixteen options by the glass is a respectable spread for a lakeside restaurant in rural Louisiana — nobody's showing up expecting a Coravin program. You'll find the usual California suspects poured by the glass, which at least means what's on the BTG list matches the bottle list in quality. Rotation appears minimal, so what you see is likely what you get season to season.
Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay — $50
Russian River Ranches is genuinely one of Sonoma-Cutrer's better expressions — leaner and more focused than their mass-market stuff. At mid-list pricing, it's the smartest Chardonnay play on the menu, especially with crawfish fettuccini on the table.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon
Jordan gets overlooked because it's been around forever and doesn't feel flashy, but this is a beautifully structured Alexander Valley Cab that consistently outperforms its reputation. On a list heavy with Napa power players, Jordan's elegance stands out — and it'll likely be priced below the Stag's Leap.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
K-J Vintner's Reserve is a $14 bottle at the grocery store. Unless it's priced accordingly, you're paying restaurant markup on something that belongs at a backyard cookout. With Sonoma-Cutrer and Rombauer available, there's no reason to settle here.
Duckhorn Merlot + Steak Oscar
Steak Oscar — steak topped with crab and béarnaise — needs a wine with enough fruit to handle the richness but enough structure to stand up to the beef. Duckhorn Merlot threads that needle perfectly: plush and round without being a fruit bomb, and it won't fight the hollandaise the way a tannic Cab would.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Mariner's isn't trying to be a wine destination — it's a waterfront restaurant in Natchitoches that happens to take its California Cab and Chardonnay seriously, and the Wine Spectator credential is earned. Send your friends here for the view and the Steak Oscar, and trust that the wine list won't let you down.
