First Impression

You open the wine list at Mastro's and it feels less like a menu and more like a challenge. Somewhere between 1,800 and 2,200 selections stare back at you, anchored by some of the most storied names in wine β€” DRC, PΓ©trus, Screaming Eagle β€” and it's immediately clear this place takes its cellar as seriously as its ribeye. The setting inside the Post Oak Hotel only turns up the volume: live music, serious glamour, and a room full of people who came to spend.

Selection Deep Dive

The depth here is genuinely impressive and earns every bit of that Wine Spectator Grand Award it's held since 2019. Burgundy and Bordeaux anchor the list with the kind of vertical depth collectors get excited about, while California checks in with the usual suspects β€” Harlan Estate, Opus One, Caymus Special Selection, Sine Qua Non β€” done right. Italy doesn't get left behind either: Gaja Barbaresco, Sassicaia, and Ornellaia represent Piedmont and Tuscany at their most serious. Champagne is stacked with Krug and Dom PΓ©rignon, and the presence of ChΓ’teau d'Yquem and Madeira shows someone on staff actually thinks about the full arc of a meal.

By the Glass

The by-the-glass program runs roughly 20 to 30 options β€” solid for a list this size, though it won't surprise you with left-field picks. Expect well-chosen California Cabernets and recognizable Champagne alongside a few European standbys. It's a by-the-glass list built for the crowd in the room: decisive, crowd-pleasing, and priced to match the zip code.

πŸ’°Best Value

Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon β€” $120

In a list where bottles routinely run $300 and up, Silver Oak is a familiar anchor that delivers genuine quality without requiring a second mortgage. It's the move when you want to drink well and still remember what you ordered.

πŸ’ŽHidden Gem

Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon

Most tables here are reaching for Opus One or Harlan on autopilot, but Far Niente is doing quiet, consistent work in Napa at a price that doesn't make you wince. It's the under-ordered bottle that earns its spot every time.

β›”Skip This

Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

It's good wine β€” no argument there β€” but at steakhouse markup prices it's hard to justify when the list has this much to offer at the same price point or lower. Caymus Special Selection has become shorthand for 'I didn't read the list,' and you can do better here.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Gaja Barbaresco + Mastro's Signature Bone-in Ribeye

The Barbaresco's tar, rose, and firm acidity cut right through the ribeye's fat without steamrolling the meat's flavor. It's a pairing that rewards the detour from California Cab and gives the kitchen its best possible partner at the table.

πŸ”₯ The Bottom Line

Mastro's at the Post Oak is the real deal β€” a Grand Award cellar in a room that knows how to throw a party. Markup is steep, but for a special occasion or a serious bottle from the back of the list, there are very few rooms in Houston that can touch it.
