First Impression
Walk into Mill's Tavern and the wine list reads like a greatest-hits album of California — heavy on Napa Cabs and Sonoma Pinots, light on adventure. It's polished and confident, just like the historic brick room it lives in. If you came for bold reds with your filet, you're in the right place.
Selection Deep Dive
The 150-200 bottle list leans hard into California, with Napa and Sonoma doing most of the heavy lifting — Heitz, Jordan, Caymus, and Flowers are all present and accounted for. There's a nod to France via Champagne and Provence rosé, but don't come here hunting for Burgundy, Barolo, or anything remotely left-field. Retro Cellars Petite Sirah from Howell Mountain is the one curveball on an otherwise predictable card. The list signals a steakhouse mentality: give the people what they know, charge accordingly.
By the Glass
Ten-plus options by the glass with a price range of $19–$25 means you're not drinking cheap, but you're not drinking bad either. Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay at $19 and Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot at $25 are crowd-pleasers done right, and Perrier-Jouët Brut by the glass is a genuinely nice touch for a Providence neighborhood spot. Rotation feels limited — this looks more like a set-and-forget glass program than one that gets refreshed with the seasons.
Rombauer Chardonnay 2024 Carneros — $19/glass
Rombauer Carneros is a butter-forward Chardonnay that commands $30–$35 at retail, so $19 a glass is one of the fairer pours on the list. It's crowd-friendly and lands well against rich sauces and seafood starters.
Retro Cellars Petite Sirah Howell Mountain
Almost everyone at a steakhouse reaches for the Cab, which means this Howell Mountain Petite Sirah gets overlooked. It's the most interesting bottle on the list — dense, structured, with the kind of tannin backbone that makes a slab of beef even better. Worth the ask.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is everywhere, and its retail price is no secret. At a restaurant with steep markups, you're almost certainly paying a significant premium for a wine you could grab at your local shop on the way home. The Jordan or Heitz Cabs are better bets for the money.
Flowers Pinot Noir 2023 Sonoma Coast + 6oz Black Angus Filet Mignon
The Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot is structured enough to stand up to beef but light enough not to bulldoze a filet. The coastal acidity cuts through the richness without the heavy tannin of a Cab — a smarter move than the obvious red when you're going leaner on the cut.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Mill's Tavern is a reliable, well-run wine program that knows its audience and plays to it without apology. It won't surprise you, but it won't let you down either — especially if you're a California red loyalist with a filet in front of you.
