First Impression
Walking into Montage in Cedar Falls, the wine list reads like a who's who of California's most recognizable names — Caymus, Jordan, Duckhorn, Cakebread. It's a curated, crowd-pleasing selection that doesn't try to be anything it isn't, and there's something genuinely refreshing about that honesty. This is a list built for the guest who wants confidence, not a scavenger hunt.
Selection Deep Dive
The 80-120 bottle range skews heavily Californian, with the expected Napa and Sonoma heavyweights holding court — Stag's Leap, Rombauer, Sonoma-Cutrer, and Cakebread all make appearances. It's not a deep-dive list for the region-hopping adventurer, and don't come looking for Burgundy deep cuts or natural wine outliers. What it does well is deliver recognizable, reliable producers at a price range ($35–$120) that doesn't feel punishing for a restaurant of this caliber. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence they've held since 2002 is well-earned — this list is consistent, properly managed, and suited to the room.
By the Glass
Ten to sixteen options by the glass gives you reasonable flexibility, with prices landing between $9 and $16 — fair for an upscale dining room in a mid-size Iowa city. The glass pour selection tracks the bottle list closely, meaning you're in California Chardonnay and Cabernet territory for the most part. Rotation doesn't appear to be aggressive, but what's there is dependable.
Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay — $9-$16 by the glass
Sonoma-Cutrer consistently overdelivers for its price point — bright apple, restrained oak, clean finish. Getting this by the glass at Montage's pricing is genuinely solid value for a polished dining room.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon
Most guests reach for Caymus first, but Jordan is the more interesting bottle — more elegant, less extracted, and it actually shows some nuance with a few years on it. It often gets overlooked in favor of the bolder name on the list.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is everywhere, and restaurants mark it up accordingly. You're paying for the name recognition more than anything surprising in the glass — the Jordan next to it on the list is a better drink and a smarter spend.
Duckhorn Merlot + Rack of Lamb
Duckhorn's Merlot brings enough structure and dark fruit to stand up to lamb without bulldozing it — the wine's plush texture meets the richness of the rack without either one winning the argument.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Montage isn't going to surprise a serious wine person, but it's going to satisfy one — and in Cedar Falls, Iowa, that's a meaningful thing. If you want a reliably good California bottle with a proper dinner, this is your room.
