Wingman Metrics
Ocean Zen's wine list reads like a greatest hits of California — recognizable names, approachable prices, nothing that's going to make you reach for your phone to Google the producer. For a Pacific Rim-inflected American spot in Springfield, Missouri, that's not necessarily a knock; it's a list built to move bottles, not win debates.
The California focus is real and consistent — Duckhorn's Decoy, J. Lohr, Kendall-Jackson, Meiomi, Robert Mondavi, and Francis Coppola's Diamond Collection make up the visible backbone. These are grocery store shelf regulars, but they're priced honestly and they do the job. Don't expect an esoteric Paso Robles Grenache or a Sonoma Coast Pinot to show up and surprise you — this list isn't built for wine explorers. What it is built for is a room full of people who want something familiar and good alongside a miso sea bass, and on that front it delivers.
We don't have an exact glass count, but the bottle list suggests a by-the-glass program that mirrors the same California-heavy lineup — Chardonnay, Cab, Pinot Noir as the workhorses. Wednesday's half-price wine night is the real reason to pay attention here; those price points become genuinely compelling when they're cut in half.
J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon — $32
Seven Oaks is a dependable Paso Robles Cab that retails around $14-16. At $32 the markup is reasonable by restaurant standards, and on a Wednesday it's basically a no-brainer. Solid fruit, soft tannins, easy drinking — it works with half the menu.
Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Claret
Most people reach for the Cab Sauv and ignore the Claret, but this Bordeaux-style blend skews softer and more food-friendly — especially with the Mongolian Beef or anything with a savory sauce component. It's the more interesting pour at the table and most people walk right past it.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
KJ Vintner's Reserve is a $12 bottle at Costco. At $28 you're paying a steep multiplier for one of the most ubiquitous Chardonnays on the planet. Order it at home. Order something else here.
Meiomi Pinot Noir + Miso Sea Bass
Meiomi's ripe, slightly sweet coastal Pinot has enough fruit weight to stand up to the miso glaze without steamrolling the delicate sea bass. It's not a sophisticated pairing, but it's a crowd-pleasing one — and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
Wednesday — Half-price wine night every Wednesday — the best reason to visit mid-week.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Ocean Zen has held a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2019, and the list earns it by being consistently fair and food-friendly, even if it never surprises you. Come on a Wednesday, order the J. Lohr, and enjoy the sea bass — you'll leave happy.
