First Impression

The rooftop views over downtown Providence are genuinely impressive, and the vibe on a weekend night is hard to argue with. But crack open the wine list and the magic fades fast — it reads like someone grabbed a case from a mid-tier distributor and called it a day. Nothing here is going to surprise you, and that's the problem.

Selection Deep Dive

The list is short and leans hard on safe, recognizable labels: Urban Riesling, William Hill Merlot, Viu Manent Reserva Malbec, Ely Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Gran Passia Super Tuscan round out the reds. There's no real regional story being told here — no New England producers, no interesting European outliers, just the kind of lineup you'd find at a hotel bar in any mid-sized American city. The Super Tuscan is the lone wildcard, but even that's a crowd-pleaser dressed up in Italian clothes. Sparkling coverage is limited to Chandon in two formats, which is fine for a rooftop cocktail crowd but not for anyone who takes bubbles seriously.

By the Glass

By-the-glass specifics aren't fully published, but the Urban Riesling at $12 a glass is the floor. Given the bottle markups running 120–180% over retail across the list, expect glass pours priced accordingly. Rotation appears minimal — this feels like a set-and-forget program rather than anything actively curated.

💰Best Value

Viu Manent Reserva Malbec — $38

At $38 it's still marked up significantly over its ~$15 retail, but it's the most food-friendly bottle on the list and holds its own against the steakhouse-heavy menu. Relative to its neighbors, it's the least punishing option.

💎Hidden Gem

Gran Passia Super Tuscan

Most people scanning this list will instinctively grab the Malbec or Cab. The Gran Passia is the only bottle here with any real character — Sangiovese-based blends in this style tend to have the kind of acidity and structure that actually stand up to a ribeye without getting buried.

Skip This

Chandon Brut

At $56 for a bottle of Chandon Brut that retails for $20, you're paying a 180% markup to drink entry-level California sparkling wine with a skyline view. The view is free. The wine is not worth it.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Gran Passia Super Tuscan + 16 oz Ribeye

Super Tuscans were basically built for big cuts of red meat — the blend's savory backbone and moderate tannins cut through the fat on a ribeye without fighting it. It's the one pairing on this list that feels intentional.

🍷Half-Price Wine Night

Wednesday and ThursdayHalf-priced bottles of wine all night long at Sarto, the associated venue. Worth noting that even at half price, several bottles land near retail — which tells you something about the base markups.

The Bottom Line

The Rooftop at the Providence G is a perfectly good place to have a cocktail and watch the city lights come on — but the wine list is a lazy afterthought at steep prices. Come for the atmosphere, drink something mixed.
