Walking into SER feels like someone actually cares โ this isn't the obligatory wine list stapled to a tapas menu. The focus is tight and intentional: Spain, top to bottom, no apologies, no filler Pinot Grigio. For Arlington, that kind of conviction is rare enough to stop and pay attention.
The list runs 150-250 bottles and stays almost entirely within Spain's borders, which sounds limiting until you see the names. Vega Sicilia Unico, Alvaro Palacios L'Ermita, and Clos Mogador are serious bottles that belong on lists twice this size. Rioja is the backbone โ CVNE Imperial Reserva, Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva, and La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 give you a genuine education in the appellation's range. The Lustau Sherry selections are a welcome detour and signal that whoever built this list actually drinks wine.
The by-the-glass program runs 12-20 options in the $12-$18 range, which is reasonable for the neighborhood and the caliber of wine on offer. We'd love to see more rotation and some Sherry pours worked into the glass program โ that Lustau lineup deserves a wider audience than bottle-only buyers.
CVNE Imperial Reserva (Rioja) โ $40-range
Imperial Reserva is a benchmark Rioja from one of the appellation's oldest and most consistent houses. Finding it at the lower end of this list's price range makes it the obvious move for anyone who wants to drink well without committing to a three-figure bottle.
Lustau Sherry selections
Most tables will scroll right past Sherry and land on a Tempranillo. That's a mistake. Lustau is one of the great Sherry houses, and having their wines on a restaurant list โ in America, in Arlington โ is genuinely unusual. Order one before dinner and reframe what you think aperitifs can be.
Alvaro Palacios L'Ermita (Priorat)
L'Ermita is an extraordinary wine, but it's also one of the most expensive bottles produced in Spain. In a casual tavern setting without a dedicated sommelier to guide the experience, you're paying a significant premium for a bottle that deserves more ceremony than it's likely to get here. Save it for a list with deeper service support.
Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva (Rioja) + Crispy bread
Prado Enea is a slow-built, traditionally structured Rioja with enough age and complexity to hold up to simple, honest food. The restaurant's bread โ crispy outside, tender inside โ is exactly the kind of thing that makes an old-school Gran Reserva sing. No competition, just contrast.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
SER is punching above its weight class for a casual Arlington tavern, and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence it's held since 2022 is earned. If you love Spain and want a serious Spanish list without a white-tablecloth price tag, this is your spot.
