First Impression
You're in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, an hour from the nearest highway with real traffic, and the wine list here has Gamay and Hobo Wine Company alongside Argentinian Malbec. That's not what you expect, and that's exactly the point. This list has Marfa's whole personality baked into it β part art-world cool, part West Texas unpretentious.
Selection Deep Dive
The list leans on Argentina and Italy as its anchors, with Felino doing a lot of the heavy lifting across Chardonnay, Cab, and Malbec. There's a nice nod to Chile via Montesano and to the natural wine crowd via the 2022 Les Athletes du Vin Gamay and Hobo Wine Company's White Light β both feel deliberate, not accidental. The gaps are real: no Spanish wines, thin on Burgundy or RhΓ΄ne, and the American presence is mostly Hobo and Shebang, which skews casual. But for a 30-50 bottle list in Marfa, the curatorial instinct is there.
By the Glass
Sixteen by-the-glass options at $12β$16 is genuinely generous for a hotel restaurant of this scale β they're clearly prioritizing accessibility over upsell. The range covers sparkling (both Bellusi Prosecco options), whites, rosΓ©, and reds, so you can build a full meal without committing to a bottle. Rotation appears limited, but the spread is wide enough that you're not stuck choosing between Chardonnay and Cab.
2022 Les Athletes du Vin Gamay β $16
A Loire-adjacent Gamay by the glass in Marfa is a minor miracle. Light, food-friendly, and the kind of wine that usually costs more on a big-city wine bar list. At this price in this zip code, it's a no-brainer.
Hobo Wine Company White Light
Most people will scroll right past this in favor of something they recognize. Don't. Hobo's White Light is a blended California white with real character β loose and a little funky β and it fits the Marfa vibe better than any Pinot Grigio on the list.
2023 Savino Pinot Grigio
There's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing interesting about it either. With the Gamay and Hobo options sitting right next to it, ordering this is like driving to Marfa and eating at a chain restaurant.
2023 Felino Malbec + Farm roasted meats
Felino pulls from high-altitude Mendoza vineyards, which keeps the Malbec bright rather than jammy. Against anything coming off a farm-to-table roast or grill, it hits the right notes without overwhelming the plate.
π² The Bottom Line
St. George Restaurant isn't trying to be a wine destination β but it's trying harder than most places twice its size in cities ten times larger. If you're in Marfa, drink the Gamay, consider the Hobo, and appreciate that someone here actually thought about this list.
