First Impression
You're sitting oceanfront at a Ritz-Carlton in Maui with tiki torches flickering and someone playing slack-key guitar nearby — the wine list almost doesn't need to be good for the evening to work. But it earns its keep: a focused, California-forward list that leans into the classics and doesn't try to be anything it's not. Wine Spectator just handed them an Award of Excellence for 2025, and that feels about right.
Selection Deep Dive
The list runs 150-250 bottles with a clear axis of California and France — Kistler and Far Niente on the Chardonnay side, Jordan and Stag's Leap holding down Cabernet, and Louis Jadot representing Burgundy without going too deep into the cellar. It's a greatest-hits approach: you won't find anything that surprises you, but you also won't be frustrated. The gaps are real — no meaningful Rhône, no rosé depth, no by-the-glass adventure outside of safe crowd-pleasers — but for a resort dining room feeding a mixed crowd of honeymooners and golf retreaters, the range covers the room. Duckhorn Merlot at $45 shows someone at least thought about accessible entry points.
By the Glass
The BTG program runs 12-20 options in the $12-$18 range, which is reasonable for a Ritz property on Maui. Expect the usual suspects — Cakebread Chardonnay, Rombauer probably lurking nearby — without much rotation or edge. Wednesday half-price wine night is the real move here if your schedule allows.
Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot 2021 — $45
At a resort that regularly pushes bottles north of $100, $45 for a genuinely good Napa Merlot is the most approachable entry on the list. Duckhorn's consistency is reliable and it won't embarrass anyone at the table.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Everyone at this table is ordering Chardonnay. Meanwhile, a well-made Washington Riesling — bright, off-dry, with real acidity — is sitting there begging to be ordered with the Kona Lobster Bisque. Most people walk right past it. Don't be most people.
Chateau Margaux 2018
At $1,250 on a resort list with no dedicated sommelier, you're paying a steep premium to drink a grand Bordeaux under a thatched roof next to someone's screaming kid. The wine deserves better context, and so does your wallet.
Kistler Chardonnay + Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi
Kistler's richness and toasty oak meet the buttery macadamia crust head-on, while enough acidity cuts through the fat of the fish. It's the most logical pairing on the menu and the one the list was clearly built around.
Wednesday — Half-price wine night on Wednesdays — the single best reason to plan your Maui dinner schedule around the wine list.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Banyan Tree is a dependable resort wine list doing exactly what it needs to do — give well-heeled diners familiar names at predictable (if steep) prices against one of the best views in Hawaii. It's not a destination for wine, but it won't ruin the evening either.
