First Impression
You're sitting in a candlelit dining room overlooking Squam Lake and the wine list arrives — it's the kind of list that matches the room perfectly: composed, unfussy, and not trying to impress you with obscurity. France and California anchor everything, which is exactly what you'd expect from a property that's held a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 1996. This isn't a destination wine program, but it's a genuinely good one.
Selection Deep Dive
The 150-250 bottle list plays its lane well, leaning hard into recognizable French and California names — Louis Jadot representing Burgundy, Caymus and Stag's Leap covering the Napa Cab crowd, and Cakebread Cellars holding down Chardonnay duty. Jordan makes an appearance too, which tells you this list is built for a guest who wants quality without homework. There are real gaps — no serious Rhône presence, no Italian depth, nothing from the Southern Hemisphere — but what's here is well-chosen and correctly stored. For a romantic inn in rural New Hampshire, this is punching above its weight class.
By the Glass
Twelve to eighteen options by the glass is genuinely respectable for a property this size, and the $12–$18 price range is fair given the setting. We'd expect the usual suspects to dominate the pour list — Chardonnay, Cab, maybe a light red — but the breadth means you can get through a whole evening without committing to a bottle if that's your move.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon — $45-$65
Jordan at the lower end of a fine dining wine list is a genuine win — it's a polished, food-friendly Sonoma Cab that drinks far above its price point and won't make your eyes water on the bill.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Most tables here are going straight for the Cabs and Chardonnay, which means this Washington State Riesling gets overlooked. That's a mistake — it's bright, off-dry, and absolutely sings against the New England seafood chowder or lobster bisque.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is everywhere, and while it's a crowd-pleaser, it's also one of the most aggressively marked-up wines in the country at the restaurant level. You can do better for the money right here on this same list.
Louis Jadot Burgundy + Pan-seared duck breast
Burgundy and duck is a classic for a reason — the earthy, red-fruited character of a Jadot Pinot Noir cuts through the richness of the duck without overwhelming it. It's the most elegant move you can make at this table.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Manor on Golden Pond won't blow a wine geek's mind, but it will make for a thoroughly enjoyable dinner with a well-maintained, fairly priced list that suits the room and the occasion. If you're driving up to the Lakes Region for a romantic weekend, you're in good hands.
