First Impression
The wine list at The Tavern at Heathman leans hard into its Pacific Northwest address — and that's not a bad thing. You're in Portland, Willamette Valley is right in your backyard, and the list knows it. The hotel setting adds a layer of polish that raises expectations, and the list mostly meets them.
Selection Deep Dive
At 200-400 bottles, this is a real list — not a clipboard with eight options. The Willamette Valley and Burgundy sections anchor things nicely, with recognizable names like Domaine Drouhin Oregon and Willamette Valley Vineyards holding down the Pinot Noir fort. Napa and Washington State fill out the American side without being lazy about it. That said, you won't find much adventurous digging here — it's a crowd-pleasing range dressed up in hotel clothes, and the gaps in natural wine or anything truly offbeat are noticeable for a city that's become a hotbed for exactly that.
By the Glass
Fifteen to twenty-five by-the-glass options is a generous pour program for a hotel restaurant, and the range skews toward approachable crowd favorites rather than anything that'll challenge you. Expect the Willamette Pinot Noirs to show up here prominently — which is exactly right for the room. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority, so don't count on discovering something new on a return visit.
Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir — null
Oregon's workhorse Pinot Noir done right — widely available but correctly positioned here as the house anchor. If the glass price is reasonable, this is the move over most of the list's Burgundy options at twice the cost.
Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir
Most people see Drouhin and assume they're paying Burgundy prices for Burgundy wine — but this is their Oregon label, and it punches well above its weight. It's the kind of bottle that makes the table feel like they ordered smart.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (house selections)
You're in Portland. The Napa Cabs on a list like this tend to carry hotel-grade markups for names you could pick up at a grocery store. Save the splurge for what they actually do well here, which is Oregon Pinot.
Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir + Pacific Northwest seasonal protein (duck or salmon)
Drouhin Oregon's Pinot has the acidity and red fruit structure to cut through rich duck fat or play alongside the earthiness of Pacific salmon without bulldozing either. It's the most on-brand pairing on the menu.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Tavern at Heathman is a reliable wine stop for anyone staying downtown or looking for a polished Oregon-focused list without doing research homework. Just know you're paying hotel pricing and the list won't surprise you — but it also won't let you down.
