Wingman Metrics
Walking into the Silver Dollar Grill, you get the full Jackson Hole fantasy — historic hotel energy, Western décor, the kind of room that feels like it's been pouring Cabernet since the cowboys came in off the range. The wine list matches the room: approachable, recognizable, and designed to make sure nobody at the table has to squint at an unfamiliar label. It's not trying to impress you, and it mostly succeeds on its own modest terms.
Fifty to eighty labels sounds like range until you notice that California and the Pacific Northwest do nearly all the heavy lifting here — we're talking the hits, and only the hits. Stag's Leap Cabernet, Rombauer Chardonnay, Meiomi Pinot Noir: this is the Mount Rushmore of restaurant wine list safe plays, and the Silver Dollar has carved all three faces. There's nothing wrong with any of these wines, but if you're hoping for a Willamette Valley outlier or a Rhône stray, keep hoping. The list reads like a greatest-hits compilation that forgot to include any deep cuts.
Eight to fourteen by-the-glass options is a reasonable spread for a hotel dining room doing three meals a day, and the pours skew predictably toward the same California producers anchoring the bottle list. Rotation appears minimal — this is a set-and-forget glass program more than a living, breathing showcase. That said, you'll rarely be stuck with something undrinkable, just nothing you haven't met before.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon — Unknown
If you're going to play it safe, play it safe with something that actually earns it. Stag's Leap has the pedigree to justify its spot on any list, and in a room full of elk and Western steakhouse energy, it's the most honest choice on the card.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
Dismissed by serious wine people as a mass-market crowd-pleaser, Meiomi is actually a solid pour for what this room is — a lively hotel bar where people are here to celebrate a ski trip or a rafting day, not to dissect terroir. Order it cold-ish and stop overthinking it.
Rombauer Chardonnay
Rombauer is everywhere, and everywhere charges too much for it. It's fine, but you're paying a Jackson Hole tourist-tax markup on top of an already inflated bottle price for a wine that every chain steakhouse in America pours. There are better uses of that money at this table.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon + Elk Gyros
Elk is lean and gamey in the best way, and a Cab with enough structure to stand up to it without bulldozing the flavors is exactly what you want. Stag's Leap has the polish to complement without competing — it's a classic move that actually makes sense here.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Silver Dollar Grill is not a wine destination, but it's a perfectly functional place to drink a bottle of something familiar while you celebrate being in one of the most beautiful places in America. Send a friend here for the elk and the atmosphere — just don't send them expecting to be surprised by the wine list.
