First Impression
The wine list at Union Kitchen lands like the restaurant itself — warm, unfussy, and clearly meant to be used rather than studied. At 120-plus bottles with a strong California spine and a respectable nod to France, it earns its Wine Spectator Award of Excellence without trying too hard. This is a neighborhood list that knows its audience.
Selection Deep Dive
California and France split the spotlight here, and the balance mostly works. You'll find familiar faces like Jordan Cabernet from Alexander Valley and Sonoma-Cutrer's Russian River Ranches Chardonnay anchoring the California side, while Louis Jadot's Burgundy selections carry the French end with quiet credibility. Duckhorn Merlot from Napa shows up too — a smart call given how many guests still haven't forgiven Sideways. The list doesn't venture far beyond these comfort zones, but what's here is well-chosen and honestly priced in the $38–$180 range.
By the Glass
Eighteen to twenty-eight pours by the glass is genuinely generous for a West Hartford neighborhood spot, and the $12–$18 range keeps things accessible without feeling like you're drinking from the bottom shelf. Whispering Angel Rosé almost certainly appears here — it's that kind of room — but the glass list is wide enough that you're not stuck with only crowd-pleasers.
Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay — $58
This is a serious wine from a serious appellation, and restaurant markups on Sonoma-Cutrer are often kinder than you'd expect. If it lands in the lower half of the bottle price range here, you're getting Russian River Chardonnay — real minerality, restraint — at a price that makes sense.
Louis Jadot Burgundy
Most tables at a California-forward list like this walk right past the French section. Don't. Jadot's reliability means you're getting honest Burgundy at restaurant prices that won't make you wince — and with the roasted chicken on the menu, it's practically a no-brainer.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
Meiomi is a $14 retail bottle. Even at the lower end of this list's pricing, you're paying a significant multiple for something mass-produced and sweet-leaning. The room offers better Pinot options — spend the extra few dollars and get there.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley + Braised Short Rib
Jordan is built for exactly this moment — a structured but approachable Cab that doesn't need another decade in the cellar, matched against a rich, slow-cooked short rib. The wine's dark fruit and quiet tannins are in sync with the dish's depth without overwhelming it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Union Kitchen earns its Wine Spectator credential the honest way — a thoughtful, properly priced list that serves the food and the room without overreaching. If you're eating in West Hartford and care about what's in your glass, this is where you go.
