Wingman Metrics
You don't expect to find a sommelier-driven wine program tucked into a Glassell Park neighborhood bistro, but here we are. The list reads like it was built by someone who actually loves wine — global, curious, and edited without being precious. It's the kind of place that makes you slow down and actually read through the whole thing.
The list runs roughly 60–100 labels and pulls from all over the map — California naturals, Rhône classics, Canary Islands oddities, and the occasional Hungarian surprise. Broc Cellars and Envinate sitting on the same list as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Tokaji Aszú tells you exactly who's building this: someone with range and a point of view. The gaps are real — you're not getting deep verticals or an extensive cellar — but every bottle here feels like a deliberate choice, not filler. Ridge Three Valleys rounding out the California section is a smart anchor for guests who want something familiar alongside the more adventurous picks.
The BTG program runs 12–20 options with glass pours landing in the $14–$22 range, which is solid for LA. It's a meaningful selection for a list this size — you're not stuck choosing between two mediocre options. We'd love to see more rotation documented publicly, but the range of what's available suggests the kitchen and wine program are at least talking to each other.
Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 2023 — $96
At roughly 85% over retail, Tempier is the least punishing markup on the list — and it's Tempier. One of the benchmark Bandol rosés in the world, structured enough to hold up to food, and a genuine flex for a neighborhood spot to even carry it.
Envinate Táganan Tinto 2022
Most people walk right past anything from the Canary Islands and head for something they recognize. That's their loss. Táganan is volcanic, savory, and unlike almost anything else you'll drink — Listán Negro from ancient terraced vines on Tenerife. It's the most interesting bottle on the list and most tables will never order it.
Broc Cellars Love Red NV
Love what Broc does, genuinely — but at $64 for a bottle you can grab at any good natural wine shop for $24, this is the sharpest markup on the list at nearly 167% over retail. It's an easy, crowd-pleasing pour, but you're paying a steep premium for the convenience. Get it by the glass if it's available, or save the bottle spend for Tempier.
Ridge Three Valleys 2021 + Seasonal farm-to-table small plates
Ridge Three Valleys is a Zinfandel-forward blend with enough structure and California fruit to anchor a spread of rotating small plates without overwhelming anything. It's the kind of bottle that works across a table — earthy, a little rustic, and built for food. At a farm-to-table spot where the menu shifts with the season, this is your safe anchor that still has something to say.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Wife and the Somm is exactly the kind of neighborhood wine bar LA needs more of — genuinely curious list, staff who know their stuff, and a vibe that doesn't make you feel like you're being tested. The markups will sting if you're paying attention, but the overall experience earns it.
